KID-SHELL

15/03/2013

New concept for the protection of child occupants of twho-wheeled motor vehicles. Programme: INNPACTO (Ministry for the Economy and Competitiveness with FEDER funds.

The Kid-Shell addresses the safety issues for children aged between seven and twelve when travelling as motorcycle passengers. Children of this age are permited to ride as motorcycle or moped passengers in  exceptional circumstances, but this carries a subsequent safety risk.

It can be difficult to find a handhold on the motorcycle. If the adult morphology is above average (in terms of size or weight), the child miay be unable to hold on to the waist of the adult. In these situations, the child is forced to seek other, less secure, handholds, such as adult trouser loops that could break and cause the child to fall, with an ensuing risk of serious injury or death. If the childs falls off the motorcycle, there is a high risk of a back injury resulting from impact with the ground or collision with a vehicle travelling, behind the motorcycle. This project's remit is, therefore, two-fold.

Firstly, the project seeks a solution to the problem of improper child attachment due to the lack of elements specifically designed to retain a passegnger on the vehicle.

Secondly, the project seeks to reduce the severity of an impact resulting from a child slipping from the vehicle or in the case of a traffic accident.
