The UCAV will train students in aerodynamics due to the high demand in the transport and competition sector

08/09/2020

The students will be able to participate in the events of Esponsorama Racing Moto GP Team, in the MOTOGP World Championship, and with the UCAV Racing Engineering in CET.

Due to the growing needs in terms of emissions and energy efficiency in vehicles, aerodynamics has become one of the fields of engineering that is gaining more prominence. Aerodynamic losses are the main component of energy consumption at high speed and in the case of electric vehicles they have a direct impact on reducing the vehicle’s range. Likewise, aerodynamics is one of the most important characteristics in the design of competition vehicles, such as F1 or MotoGP. That is why manufacturers are demanding engineers with knowledge in aerodynamics with analysis and development capacity in this field to advance in the development of vehicles, and components with better aerodynamic coefficients.

The Universidad Católica de Ávila (UCAV), in collaboration with Applus IDIADA and Esponsorama Racing Avintia, has decided to offer a Master's Degree in Aerodynamics in order to meet the needs of the sector. To this end, it will provide students with the knowledge necessary to understand the influence of different parts of the vehicle on aerodynamic forces, providing them with the tools necessary to analyze and improve cars, motorcycles, trucks, buses and racing vehicles.

The Master’s is aimed at engineering students, people with a higher education in the automotive industry or similar, drivers, development engineers and R&D&i, and professionals in the automotive industry who want to expand their knowledge and/or engage in the world of motorsport.

This course will be supervised by the UCAV and coordinated and taught by the team of Applus IDIADA aerodynamics engineers, a world reference in automotive engineering, with more than 30 years’ experience in CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation and aerodynamic testing for the main international vehicle manufacturers. Enric Aramburu, IDIADA's Fluid Engineering product manager, will coordinate the Master's curriculum and supervise its progress.

Depending on their performance and technical qualities, all students will be able to participate in the Esponsorama Racing Moto GP Team events, and experience a Grand Prix in the Moto GP World Championship or participate in the Moto GP tests in accordance with the Esponsorama Racing team's race planning.

Furthemore, the students interested in racing cars will have the opportunity to be part of the UCAV Racing Engineering at the CET Touring Spanish Championship being able to test out their projects with the team.

The Master’s also contemplates the possibility for the students to test in a wind tunnel in Europe, to complement their practical training and to become familiar with the most advanced testing techniques.
