Applus+ IDIADA Introduces New Brake Emissions Testing Facility

15/10/2024

In a significant move to address upcoming automotive industry regulations, at Applus+ IDIADA we have expanded our capabilities with a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to brake particle emissions measurement. This expansion comes at a crucial time as the automotive sector prepares for the implementation of the Euro 7 standard –becoming mandatory for all vehicles starting November 2026–, which will introduce more stringent emissions regulations.

The new facility, located in Applus+ IDIADA's headquarters in Spain, features two advanced test cells specifically designed for measuring brake particles emitted by light vehicles weighing up to 3,500 kg. These cells are fully compliant with GTR24 specifications, allowing us to perform both right-hand corner and left-hand corner brake assembly tests simultaneously.

As a member of the Particle Measurement Programme (PMP) working group, Applus+ IDIADA has been actively involved in defining the test procedures and participating in round-robin activities. This collaboration ensures that our testing methods are at the forefront of industry standards.

    Brake Emissions Testing Process

The testing process is comprehensive and rigorous. It begins with a 22-hour simulated driving cycle to condition the brakes, followed by a 6-hour cycle during which the number and mass of particles generated by the brakes are precisely measured. The facility is equipped with a brake emissions test system capable of measuring PM10, PM2.5, TPN10, and SPN10 particles, providing a thorough analysis of brake wear emissions.

This new service complements our existing portfolio of emissions tests, offering a complete range of capabilities for brake testing. Depending on client needs, IDIADA provides both dynamometer and vehicle testing capabilities, as well as dedicated brake emissions measurements. Our in-house design and manufacturing of testing fixtures allow for optimized testing processes, reducing overall project timelines.

Advanced Capabilities to Meet Industry Demand

Additionally, Applus+ IDIADA can determine vehicle-specific friction braking share coefficients using our chassis dynamometer testing facilities with a pressure-based method. This capability further enhances the accuracy and relevance of the brake emissions testing results.

The introduction of this facility addresses the growing demand from both vehicle manufacturers and companies specializing in brake pads and discs. With increasing demand, our test cells are now fully operational and ready to support clients in meeting Euro 7 standards.

This strategic expansion further cements Applus+ IDIADA’s position as a key partner in automotive engineering and testing, helping to shape the future of cleaner and more environmentally friendly vehicles.
