In a significant move towards sustainable automotive innovation, Applus+ IDIADA has unveiled a state-of-the-art hydrogen vehicle testing facility. This is one of only a handful in Europe and represents a major leap forward in the company's commitment to staying ahead of industry needs and adapting to the evolving automotive landscape.
The new facility boasts advanced capabilities for comprehensive testing. It has the capacity to test vehicles up to 5,000 kg per axle, including light commercial vehicles. The testing process utilizes certified reference hydrogen with over 99.97% purity, ensuring the highest quality standards. Before reaching the vehicle, the hydrogen passes through sophisticated measuring equipment that precisely quantifies the volume of gas supplied.
For fuel cell vehicles, the facility analyses the battery's electric energy consumption and the hydrogen consumption according to different requirements from worldwide Regulations.
Given the unique nature of hydrogen testing, the facility incorporates stringent safety measures. It features state-of-the-art leak detection systems and high-precision concentration sensors to monitor the environment constantly. The installation is equipped with ATEX-compliant lighting, designed to operate safely in potentially explosive atmospheres. Additionally, specialized ventilation mechanisms have been implemented to ensure optimal air quality and safety.
To operate this advanced facility, a team of approximately 20 specialists has been assembled. This team includes technicians, instrumentation experts, and engineers, all of whom have undergone rigorous training in accordance with the NS31 internal standard for hydrogen vehicles. This ensures that all operations are conducted with the highest level of expertise and safety.
